Fetti the Confetti

By Shayleen's Team

Description: A piece of confetti realizes there's more to life than just the "big moments". Thank you to the X in a Box team, Pixar hosts, and my peers who gave me helpful feedback!

This story was endearing and heart-tugging. Fetti's impassioned desire turning to despair through unexpected circumstances, then turning to opportunity, is an uplifting and satisfying story arc. Both characters grew and learned alot about their needs, wants and how to turn misfortune into bliss. Great little story with effective use of color and black and white.

Oh, I'm glad to see this work of art again! It's wonderful in every way, as I told you in the previous issue: your illustrations and drawing style, the use of different planes, colors and perspectives, your narration, melody and sound effects, the messages and final moral, the emotionality it conveys, etc. My most sincere congratulations once again! :)

What a wonderful story about Fetti! I really enjoyed watching this story so fresh, original, funny and tender at the same time. It has it all, congratulations! For starters, the music chosen is very appropriate, the narration is great (and you have a very nice voice, Shayleen), the use of color is perfect to highlight Fetti, the perspectives are super appropriate throughout and I love your drawing style. What an AWESOME job! Also, I really identified with the birthday girl, as I tend to do the same thing when I have a little keepsake I like (I save it on my phone, hehe). I can't imagine a happier and more powerful ending full of emotions than the one you came up with! BRAVO, MY FRIEND! A big hug!

Thank you so much, Isla! You're in good company regarding the little keepsakes. That's where this story idea came from, as I currently have four pieces of confetti in my phone case as reminders of those fun days! I appreciate you watching! Thanks again!

This is one of the greatest project I have seen here ! It’s incredible and has a lot of emotions. It was uncommon to see the point of view of a confetti, but it works very much ! I love it

oh, that is high praise, and I don't take it lightly. Thank you so much! That's a great note about the point of view, and I will definitely think about that as I develop the story further. Are there specific moments that you wished we saw the point of view of the confetti?

Well, I don’t really know because it seems so complement, maybe she was talking to other confettis next to here ? Or just hearing them being hyped or else ? But I’m not sure it’s necessary, it was all good already !

Gotcha! Yes, I am trying to work out the details about whether or not the other confetti are alive, and if so how that plays out. Thanks again for your feedback!

I really enjoyed seeing the climax to your story and the denouement was well done and so satisfying. Your visuals, camera angles and artwork were terrific.

Now with the narrated Act 3 (and specially with your exact final sentence), it is clear what happened! And the message got through well. I also liked that she is keeping Fetti on her phone, that is easily understadable as something precious and to remind of the day. Still talking about Act 3, I see some opportunities to make this even more clear and to expand what you did: When the girl picks up Fetti, you didn't mention what made her pick up Fetti. For example, it can be that the shiny color picked her interest? The drawing showed a little smile but it was very subtle, so you can indicate that in your narration. Also, your use of the word "suddenly" when talking about what the girl felt evoked for me "something is going to happen", which in fact it is more about "in that instant, it made her remember what the confetti represents what just happened". At the very least, this "suddenly" part is a bit unexpected and doesn't contribute to the continuity of your scene, because as a viewer we are supposed to be intrigued about what she is going to do with Fetti, but you introduce something that feels urgent and like another totally different information/scene than following the pick up of Fetti, so one solution to protect the continuity of your scene would be to just replace the text of the narration that matches better this transition of picking up Fetti - associating Fetti with the good moments of the party. And it is a very recent event, it just happened, so the word "memories" feel a bit out of place too, as well as the word "hold the memories", which for me is better suited with words like "represent", "remember", etc. An example of changing the text can be, instead of "...and picked her up. She suddenly realized that this confetti held...", "...and picked her up. Looking at this confetti, she reminded herself of all the good memories of this day, ...". And another important element is how Fetti is feeling through all of this. What is Fetti thinking when the girl is doing all of that, specially putting on the phone? Why and how would Fetti know this is a good thing? It is OK that Fetti is not "doing" something because of its physical limitations, so in that case it is important to keep showing more about Fetti, your Act 3 is showing too much about what the girl is feeling. And another important element is to answer the question: "what kind of moments/things are Fetti enjoying from now on?", because even though we can understand that fun moments like taking a picture is going to happen, it is not mentioned explicitely if Fetti actually likes being part of the phone case now. After all, it wanted to pop and now this seems like a very different kind of thing to be doing, so why/how would Fetti like this? And we can say that the "phone" is the one doing the action, Fetti is not helping with the picture, but Fetti is enjoying the moment with her, so I felt the need to have clearly explained if Fetti is happy to be seeing/participating in other happy moments, or is happy to be physically part of something, or is happy to be actively still be doing something despite the fact if it is a big moment or not, or the combination of these 3. And the solution to all of this is to simply add more text to the narration, explaining how Fetti considers this new experience of sharing moments in that specific position, saying if it is someting Fetti onsiders "doing together" (because popping can be done together with sharing the fun moment of the party, but being in the phone is not doing an action like popping), and of course images if there is more information that can be shown about that, like other moments other than the photo. This is to make sure it makes the ending as great as the rest of the video. Nice on finishing the submission :)
